Our challenge this week in our craft month collaboration was to do something with an engineering theme. What’s more fun than a popsicle stick catapult?!
Why Engineering For Girls
Before we get to the craft I want to address why I think Engineering (and all STEM activities) are great for girls specifically.
As the mother of a girl, I am concerned that girls don’t typically go into the field of engineering. In the United States, only 15% of the engineering workforce is women. And those that are in this field are often treated secondary in a lot of instances.
Parents of girls should be preparing them for STEM careers because women are just as capable as men! So let’s do away with stereotyping.
How To Make A Popsicle Stick Catapult
We chose to start off with a basic catapult so that Lexi could make it herself. It is incredibly effective and we’ve had great fun testing out how far we can shoot objects and accuracy.
Once your child has mastered the basic catapult you can start to experiment as a family with various, more complex designs, like these…
