Last year Lexi wanted a mermaid themed birthday party… It was all the trend and most little girls’ parties we went to were mermaid themed. And we LOVED it!
There’s something about the whimsy of mermaids that inspires creativity. Reminiscing about the parties we have been to inspired me to put together a mermaid activity pack.
This activity pack is in no way intended to replace school work. The intention is to help children get lost in an underwater world of mermaids, seahorses and more. And for imaginative play to follow.
Why imaginative play is important
The imagination opens up a whole world of pretend for children, and pretending is important!
Albert Einstein said, “Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere.” It is true!
Pretend play enhances a child’s capacity for cognitive flexibility and, ultimately, creativity. By absorbing themselves in an imaginative game, children are given the opportunity to practice using their imagination, to exercise their brain and train it to think creatively, and to learn how to think for themselves. The ability to use our imagination is a cognitive skill that we all require through to adulthood, and we need to encourage children to learn how to do this from early on.
Pretending during play allows children to experiment with language in various situations to see how it affects us (and others). All young children are selfish at times. When children engage in imaginative play they are essentially experimenting with the social and emotional roles of life. They learn to modulate their emotions and control their impulses.
